A data center is where the majority of an enterprise servers and storage are located, operated and managed.

Per-rack power requirements constrain the number of racks a data center can support. A typical 10,000 - 20,000 sq. ft. facility designed for 50 - 100 watts/sq. ft requires 1/2 megawatt to 2 megawatts of power. Availability and cost of utility power in the megawatt range is expensive and difficult to obtain. Supporting infrastructure - generators, ATS, UPS, and distribution equipment - also are costly. Careful planning and growth projections must be maintained to ensure power requirements can be met.

There is no single, standardized method to account for data center costs. Users need to define a chart of accounts that specifies all the cost elements that constitute the overall cost, and the key portfolios or categories (such as servers, software and networking) that are part of that cost.

Five issues IT managers must consider to ensure smooth data center operations are as follows: Regulatory compliance, disaster recovery/business continuance, power, Hosted Solutionscooling, and IT as a service will be dominant themes in the coming year as companies work to manage their IT assets to support business goals.

Storage virtualization is the pooling of physical storage from multiple network storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device that is managed from a central console. Storage virtualization is commonly used in storage area networks (SANs).

In addition to using virtualization technology to partition one machine into several virtual machines, you can also use virtualization solutions to combine multiple physical resources into a single virtual resource. A good example of this is storage virtualization, where multiple network storage resources are pooled into what appears as a single storage device for easier and more efficient management of these resources.

While you might think that the chances of having a major loss of data on your computer or even having your entire computer crash are very small, disasters happen and it is always best to prepare for the worst, especially when it comes to something as irreplaceable as your files.

With the Cisco UCS M81KR adapter, multiple virtual interfaces (VIFs) can be identified to match those used by the service console, VMware VMkernel, virtual machine data, Cisco Nexus 1000V Series VLANs, etc. as required. Each of these adapters can be defined within the Cisco Unified Computing System as connected to an individual fabric interconnect and, optionally, enabling a failover to the other.

Even though Green IT has become a hot topic in 2010, its roots run back to early 90's. In 1992, the Energy Star program was launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program encouraged new electronic devices to be more energy-efficient by lowering energy consumption, efficient design and reduced use of hazardous material. The Energy Star program was revised in 2006 and now includes much stricter efficiency requirements and a tiered ranking system for approval.

A data storage system includes a disk drive array including a plurality of disk drives; a first storage processor for controlling the operation of the data storage system; a second storage processor forcontrolling the operation of the data storage system; a first arbiter for controlling communication of data from the first storage processor and the second storage processor to a first group of disk drives of the disk drive array; a second arbiter forcontrolling communication of data from the first storage processor and the second storage processor to a second group of disk drives of the disk drive array; and a third arbiter for controlling communication of data from the first storage processor andthe second storage processor to a third group of disk drives of the disk drive array. Selected data is redundantly stored on disk drives in the first group of disk drives, the second group of disk drives and the third group of disk drives such that, upon failure of the first arbiter, the selected data is available to the first storage processor and the second storage processor through the second and third arbiters.

A broad group of industry-leading partners supports the open, standards-based unified fabric architecture of the Cisco Nexus 5010 Switch. This switch also delivers more than 500 Gbps of switching capacity with 20 fixed wirespeed 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Data Center Ethernet and FCoE. In addition, one expansion port supports 8-port 1/2/4 Gigabit Fibre Channel, 4-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Data Center Ethernet and FCoE) and 4-port 1/2/4 Gigabit Fibre Channel, and 6-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Data Center Ethernet and FCoE).
